According to the BoE’s by-laws “In general, the work of the Board of Education is construed to be two-fold: (1) the formulation of policies underlying public education in New Canaan; and (2) the appraisal of the effectiveness with which the policies are being carried out. The execution and administration of policies is to be delegated to the Superintendent and other members of the school staff.”
As a Board of Education member, I will do the oversight that the by-laws require. It is up to the Board of Education members to set priorities and to make sure that they are carried out. The Board of Education should not be a rubber stamp for the school district.
The Board of Education also needs to be transparent in the way it works. They need more to create new committees to handle different issues as well as seek out more parental involvement in decision making.
